The Importance of Understanding Our Oceans
Learning about the marine environment and the wildlife that are members of this complex ecosystem is key to protecting our oceans and providing a healthy planet
for future generations. In recent years, “ocean literacy” and “ocean awareness” have become popular catch phrases in the educational community. Government and non-government organizations now realize that the health and well being of the human population is directly connected to the health of the world’s oceans. All marine organisms, regardless of their size and abundance, play an important role as members of the world community. Human induced pressures including global warming, pollution and over-fishing have negative impacts on marine ecosystems and the overall health of planet Earth.
Many organisms
living in the world’s oceans act as sentinels that provide information on the overall health of the seas and the potential health of the human population. For those of us who eat fish, we share a common food supply with many marine species, including whales, dolphins, and seals. Monitoring the behavior and health of these marine mammals helps to ensure a safe and plentiful food source for us in the future. Humans also share aspects of a common physiology with these marine mammals; therefore, we are subject to the same exposures of pollution and disease as they are.
Knowing why a seal has stranded on a local beach allows us to protect other seals living in the same area and gives us insight into possible hazards that may affect humans as well.
Marine education provides opportunities for us to learn more about our fragile oceans and to become better citizens of planet Earth. When we teach our children about the wonders of the earth and why it is important that we respect and cherish this fragile world, we are helping to ensure the health and survival of the planet. Learning about the world around us provides the
knowledge and understanding necessary to make appropriate moral and political decisions about the future of our coastal communities and environments. And let’s not forget that learning about the microorganisms, plants and animals that live in the oceans is fun and exciting for kids of all ages!
Educational experiences in nature’s classroom provide a better understanding of our interconnected relationship to the other living organisms that share our planet home. Going outside and exploring the wonders of nature helps us develop a greater appreciation for all things living and non-living that are part of the amazing world around us.
